Ask IT Career Coach

I have 8 years of experience in Mainframes(4-Investment banking domain, 4- transportation domain) and I worked in DB2,IMS/DB, JCL, CICS, COBOL last year.
I am looking for a career growth. My interests are technically oriented and I would love to help develop products.

I am not interested in becoming a Project Lead / Manager.
What should I do that will make me more valuable in the market and increase my knowledge or scope?
Please advise.

The Best Career Options for Technically Oriented Mainframe Professionals

This post reviews the best career options of technically oriented mainframe professionals with a background in DB2,IMS/DB, JCL, CICS, COBOL, etc.

Learn Relational Databases

The first and the easiest thing to do is to learn a relational database management system (RDBMS).

There are several relational database management systems in the market including: Oracle, Microsoft Access, MySQL and SQL Server.

Oracle is popular in the Java, Sun computing world. Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Access is popular in the Windows / Microsoft Networked Environment and MySQL is popular in the PHP, Linux and LAMP World.

Learn Web Development Languages

Web Developers have highly portable and highly marketable skills.

By highly portable I mean that web development skills are easily transfered across countries, industries or businesses without expensive re-training.

By highly marketable I mean that there is a lot of demand for web development skills. Companies are always revamping their websites or launching new web applications which all drives up the demand for those skills.

With all this in mind, the web development skills that I would recommend include: ASP.NET and C# or PHP.

ASP.NET and C# is popular in the corporate Microsoft world and PHP in the Linux world.

I am having 5 years of experience in mainframe. looking to change technology from mainframe, Many people have suggested me to switch into data warehousing as it is easy to switch from mainframe. I am not aware about data warehousing and really confused whether I should go for data warehousing blindly or any other technology. I have interest to learn data warehousing or oracle. Can you please suggest which one will be better and easy for me to switch into and in which technology I will get better opportunity.
